Key Stage 2 classroom evaluation summary: 'Year 5 were introduced to the program Words and Music over a four week period. They were firstly taught how to navigate the screen and learnt the essence of the program and ICT skills needed to use the program successfully. The lessons that followed were purely Music based. Taking into account prior knowledge and the scheme of work appropriate for Year 5 a variety of activities were set, which involved changing musical elements in a piece of music and composition activities. During every lesson after a modelled introduction on the interactive whiteboard, pupils were asked to commence with their activities. The class were brought back together several times during the lesson to discuss how well a task was progressing and if any general problems were occurring. Pupils were encouraged to play examples of their work and able to describe their choices. This is a comprehensive resource with many features we have not yet had time to explore e.g. writing of lyrics, and recording the children singing and playing along. Since the evaluation was carrried out Topologika have updated the pack to include .mp3 saves as well as .midi, .wav, .musicXML and .activity. This means that children can not only save their work within Words & Music but also burn it onto CDs or upload it to personal MP3 players. Also supplied in the new version are 36 extra lesson ideas (making 60 in all) with over 100 extra ready-to-use activity files, many of which are designed for Key Stage 3 and beyond.'
