Few pupils, during my 30 years classroom teaching of English Language, ever instinctively or eagerly consulted traditional print-based reference materials, such as the dictionary or thesaurus. That challenge is effectively and enjoyably addressed and resolved by the Visual Thesaurus program from TAG. At once enticing and enlivening, enhancing and enlightening, the Visual Thesaurus allows the learner to address language in a language that dynamically addresses today's youth. The ease and excitement of exploring and analysing word relationships and meanings, in 2- and 3-dimensions, dragging and rotating and toggling and filtering and controlling visual displays, demonstrably succeeds in motivating and engaging even reluctant learners. Usefully, there are also provisions for easily importing from other applications and for editing content, with conveniently accessible on-screen and on-line support facilities (and a program developer whom I have found readily receptive to further development possibilities). In sum, the medium is dramatically exploited for exploring language structure, fostering variety of expression and promoting the development of critical thinking and writing skills.
