The Rose Review of the Primary Curriculum in England
Monday 18th of May 2009
Sir Jim Rose published his Final Report of the independent review of the primary curriculum on 30th April 2009. He has been considering what the curriculum should contain and how the content and teaching should change in order to equip pupils with the necessary skills to survive in the 21st Century. It is the most wide ranging review for over 20 years and aims to reduce prescription and give teachers greater flexibility.
What changes are proposed?
· Literacy, Numeracy, ICT and personal development should form the new core of the primary curriculum
· There will be six new areas of learning
• understanding English, communication and languages;
• mathematical understanding;
• understanding the arts;
• historical, geographical and social understanding;
• understanding physical development, health and wellbeing; and
• scientific and technological understanding.
· New focus on speaking and listening
· Summer born children can start school in the September after their fourth birthday rather than wait until January.
